After a short time as Principal Horn with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, he was invited to be Principal Horn of the English Chamber Orchestra in 1997 and enjoyed a busy schedule touring the world, working with such well-known artists as Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Abbado, Mstislav Rostropovich, Colin Davis, Pinchus Zuckerman, Christian Zacharius, Radu Lupu and Mitsuko Uchida.

Alongside his work with the ECO Richard has performed on over 900 film soundtracks. From early days with Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams and John Barry through to James Horner, Howard Shore, Danny Elfman, James Newton-Howard and Hans Zimmer.
